ISHA Stands with Nurses and Midwives
The executive of the Irish Student Health Association (ISHA) would like to publicly express our wholehearted support for our nursing and midwifery colleagues in the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) in relation to their ongoing strike action.
This is only the second time in the history of the INMO that nurses have felt the need to undertake strike action and that should serve as a sign of the significant distress that the nursing profession and indeed the health services in general across Ireland feel at this moment in time. There is clear evidence of a difficulty with recruitment and retention of healthcare professionals in Ireland at present and this is particularly so in the nursing and midwifery field.
Cuts to health resourcing in recent years have led to pay disparity, which is contributing significantly to issues with recruitment and retention of staff. More importantly, this is consequently impacting on the safety and wellbeing of both staff and patients alike.
ISHA would therefore like to publicly express our solidarity and support for our colleagues in the INMO regarding their current industrial action.
