The UK Student Health Association invited entries from Association Members, Medical and Nursing Students for: THE TOM KELLY ESSAY PRIZE 2017 and a £500 PRIZE was awarded to Laura Tully, President of the Irish Student Health Association for her entry.

Dr Tom Kelly joined the London University Central Institution Health Service in 1970. As a member of BAHSHE (now Student Health Association), he contributed as Librarian and Treasurer to the association, and was elected President in 1987. He had a particular interest in the management of stress in both students and staff. Sadly, he died suddenly in 1989. In memory of his contribution to student health, the Tom Kelly Memorial essay prize was named in his honour. It has been awarded biannually since 1997.
